Like the previous two paintings in this series, this work is a combination of remembered places visited and a dreamscape in my mind’s eye, physically placing myself in the landscape and walking through it onward into the blue veil that falls on an indistinct horizon, experiencing the atmosphere and sensations felt when looking across the bog at sunset.
The raking light illuminates a large cumulus cloud that moves across the land. Light and cloud are intertwined in a ballet that slowly disappears as nightfall arrives.
I have been working on the cloud for a number of weeks, building up layer upon layer of glazes of transparent paint.
I was waiting for each layer of cobalt, manganese and violets to dry over an initial under painting of red to allow the light to pass through, hit the red under paint and bounce back.
With this process, the colours shifted to rich purples and blues while giving the cloud a depth of colour, a luminous quality that glows from the inside out.
Can you imagine yourself walking through this landscape?
Beautiful
Thanks very much Eoin
Now wait…here I thought you just whipped these out in an hour or two! (I lied)…beautiful…always love your “cloud work”…it definitely shows in the final rendering. Just makes me wish I had $1K lying around!!! Well done, John…and yes, I wish I were meandering through this landscape!!
‘Thanks very much Terry, the idea of only an ‘hour or two’ sounds appealing, there was a fair bit of teeth pulling with this one, we keep moving forward’!
This is beautiful John and I think your description of ‘glowing from the inside out’ expresses the luminosity very well; the building up of glazes might be slow but the results are well worthwhile. Those clouds have been created with paint? how do you do it? Back down to the earth I love the bog grasses and wonderful blending and balance of colours as well as the emerging light on the horizon. Congratulations.
Hello Christine,
Thank you very much for your comment on the painting. The time it took with the glazing was an interesting exercise for me in patience and perseverance. I too liked how the grasses ended up and help to anchor ,back down to earth’ the moveable feast above.
Wow this really does it for me I think the light effects are great I hope it finds a good home.
Hello Jan,
Thank you very much for your comment. Let’s hope it finds a good home too 🙂
Hello Jane,
Thank you very much, I hope it finds a good home too 🙂
Dear John,
I can, indeed ! No need to force myself. I walk and run through the soft and warm brown grass which caresses my ankles and feel like being able to reach and touch soon the exceptional inviting sky. Whether it turns out successfully or not doesn’t matter as my joy comes from my imaginary wayfaring…..
A fantastic painting again which moves me very much !
Hello Dominique,
What a beautiful poetic response to the painting thank you very much. It is so good to hear that it moved you so!
