Twilight II, ©John O’Grady
14.25″ x 16″ oil and wax on panel, requires framing.
The palette is quiet and understated, reflecting the silent movement of clouds onto land in the west of Ireland.
The soft light from the sky, when the sun has dropped below the horizon, fills the atmosphere with a silver glow.
The clouds move gradually across sea and land like floating sculptures on the horizon. They are silhouetted against the sky in muted blue grey and violet.
The sea surf adds light and suggests a rhythm to echo the passage of clouds.
I’d love to read your comment.
Beautiful, John…I especially like the “mist” arising along the shoreline…well done!!
Hello Terry,
Thanks very much for your comment, yes the mist along the shore gives it a particular atmosphere I think.
In the distance, the light in the sky and the light on the water merge to erase the horizon line. This feels to me like pure light — radiated and reflected — in contrast with forms — the clouds, shifting, and the earth, battered by the sea. Green and violet give the forms added dimension. The elements are conversing with each other and taking on the same blue hue as the light fades.
Hello Jo,
That quality of ‘pure light’ that you mention, encapsulates the essence of this piece and what I am trying to get at, flooding the painting with light and yes that reoccurring theme of ‘the elements conversing’ popping up again. Thank you very much for your comment.
another lovely one John, fair play
Thanks very much Eoin.
There is a beautiful light in this painting John – it glows and floods through the whole scene. The sea, land and sky merge in the misty atmosphere.
Hello Christine,
Thank you very much for your reading of the painting, Yes it really is all about that quality light.
