The Dancing Light

In this piece, I wanted to create drama and energy.
To do so, I used a limited colour palette: burnt umber, raw sienna, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white.
The reduced palette gives a unifying feel to the whole painting, and at the same time it serves to accentuate the contrast between dark and light.
Across the field, grasses sway from side to side to the rhythm of the unfolding drama high above in the sky.
Dark clouds sweep back and forth and cover the sun in a veil that diffuses light across the land.
Between the dark and the light, all is in a state of flux.
Can you feel the energy and charged mood of this artwork?
John, super sky. And I like the white house contrasted with the surrounding darks. Very dynamic, dramatic painting.
Thanks very much Robert, I hope your own work is going well.
Glad to hear you responded to the painting.
Light and dark; warm and cool. The little visual anchor of the white house in the distance with its dark halo of trees. The black threat in the sky. This has atmosphere and emotion in spades. Just beautiful, John.
Hello Jo,
It’s great to hear that you felt the emotion in the painting.
Thank you for your insights on the painting, yes I agree the light and Dark, warm and cool balanced, gives the painting its drama.
I just love everything about this John!! The colour, the play between light and dark and the drama of the threatening sky plus the wonderful, wonderful warm richness of bog grasses in autumn. Altogether, there is a sense of isolation within nature but the little white house is a reminder of home. Congratulations.
Hello Chris,
I thought this piece might connect with you, knowing your love of autumnal rich colours, such as the copper in the grasses.
Yes the little house is cosseted and isolated amongst the trees and grasses, barely discernible except for the flash of white.
Thank you very much
Such a beautiful painting! Will a print of this become available?
Thank you Fiona for your comment. I am going to send you an email regarding your print query.
