Many years ago, I spent a few days in the bog cutting turf in the west of Ireland with a friend’s family.
I have a special memory of that time.
This painting is a view across the bog and shows three banks of turf, walls of turf that are being cut into.
In the distance, brick-size shapes of turf called sods are piled on ricks or mounds and left to dry before they are used
for fuel in the winter. Their particular aroma pervades Ireland on cold days.
I love the cool sweep of the sky contrasting with the warmth of the earth in an unmistakeable Irish landscape.
Thanks Chris for your comment. The background took a little work first thing this morning to arrive at the finished article.
