There can be no light without dark.
We tend to view darkness as being negative but of course without it the light would be pale and feeble and go unnoticed. These thoughts brought to mind the West of Ireland and a light that can be sublime.
I recollect evenings on the coast of Clare watching the heavy rain clouds roll in off the Atlantic, the wind rising, beams of light darting in between the clouds onto the surface of the water forever shifting and morphing in a rich counterpoint to the sky above…
Recalling the feelings and deep connection with nature felt then resulted in today’s piece. It is quiet like other works on this theme and yet, understated, appears more monochromatic to emphasise the drama lights and darks create.
A very dark and brooding piece, very atmospheric and dramatic, I love it!
Hello Tisha,
Yes it’s a brooding one alright, hopefully balanced with some of the light showing through, Glad you like it, Thank you
Hi John!
This is a wonderful painting! I could step inside, walk a bit and hurry home, where warmth and a good cup of tea will wait for me. Then I would take my seat near the window and watch the sky change the scene, maybe to more light, maybe to more darkness…
I love your work, it reminds me of Ireland and how magical this kind of weather can be.
Have a good sunday eve!
My regards! Frauke
Hello Frauke,
I love the idea of you being able to step inside it and walk around, that would be great. Finding a seat indoors sounds like a plan as that rain is deinitely coming our way 🙂
Enjoy your Sunday evening too and thank you for your kind words
Love it, John. You certainly did capture the play of light and dark so beautifully…but the horizon holds hope for a bright day on the morrow!! And I love the rain shower on the right…perhaps it will rain out before it reaches me!!! LOL!!! Your work is always a joy…thank you!
Hello Terry,
You know that special light, I am sure you have experienced it. Yes I wanted a little bit of warmth on the horizon too pull us through to the horizon line, thanks for spotting that. Glad to know that you are still enjoying the posts.
Hello John, your series of works on the theme of light on water always seem to connect with me. In the ‘Take me to the Island’ views (two of which I am fortunate enough to be able to see just now) I look at light and shade on both land and sea. In this latest sea view it is definitely the luminous effect of light in a vast expanse that is the main focus of interest; it is beautifully and subtly executed.
Hello Christine,
It seems something that draws me back to it and you too, I am happy to hear. Perhaps it is that connection to the elements that we feel on such a deep level.I think we need to be stirred emotionally, to re-establish the bonds. Thank you for your thoughtful comment
I love love love this picture. The light over the island is so reminiscent of Ireland how I remember from my childhood before they spoilt Ireland with bungalows!
Hello Jane,
That’s great that the painting brought back so many memories. No doubt about it the ‘Celtic Tiger’ has a lot to answer for. Thank you
