At this time of year, the clouds billowing over Mont Ventoux in Provence dwarf this 1912 metres-high mountain.
Every time I see these sculptures rising into the sky, they remind me of the large mountains of cloud you can see in the West of Ireland.
They are at their best at the end of the day when you can spot them travelling across the Atlantic towards landfall.
Then, if you look towards the horizon, sea and land are cast in a blue shadow and the only mass still illuminated by the sun are these dramatic clouds.
Can we ever tire of the spectacle of sunsets?
The raking sunlight moves down through the clouds from yellow white through to orange and then to red and blue/purple.
In this painting, I wanted to capture one of these magical moments. The colours. Our relationship to these elements of nature. And us, as onlookers not seen but nevertheless there.
How small we really are!
The wonder of nature is all around, we just need to look up.
I’d love to hear what you think.
Nice contrasts in this skyscape John. I like the colour combination and how the sea looks still and quiet while the cumulus cloud gorged with light is so much more dynamic and imposing. But my favourite is the band of emerald green at the bottom of the painting, it anchors the painting nicely.
Hello Nath,
Yes I agree with you about the band of emerald green at the bottom it as you say anchors the painting and acts as a good counterpoint to the billowing cloud. Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment.
