Evening at Notre-Dame d’Aubune, ©John O’Grady, 2014

This is a painting of the beautiful provençal chapel called Notre-Dame d’Aubune situated just outside the town of Beaumes de Venise known for its exquisite muscat dessert wines.
I painted this from the memory of a walk I did last autumn. I remember distinctly walking through the grasses glowing in the evening light and the blue black shadows of the trees surrounding the cream pinks of the church.
This chapel dating back to the XI or XII century is the one part of the painting that I couldn’t recall so I used a photograph to capture the architecture.
Do leave a comment, I’d love to read what you have to say about this painting.
Wonderful composition — the way the diagonals lead the eye through the landscape, and the glow of the church anchors the piece. And gorgeous light. You have great skill in conveying mood and time of day. The grasses are in motion in the evening wind; I can hear them rustling. Just lovely, John.
Thank you Josephine, this was the piece I mentioned, where I had to reference the church from a photograph where my recall wasn’t the best, I think I caught a little of the mood in this one
Yes, I remember!
I really like the atmosphere of this painting. You captured the temperature and light of a warm evening in Provence. Lovely.
Thank you Nathalie for your comment, it’s all laid out before me I just have to distill it
I too can hear the soughing of the grasses and the lovely sky conveys the special feel of the end of a warm day. Although I don’t know Provence, I can feel it through the atmosphere conveyed in colour and mood.
Thank you Chris, what a lovely word “soughing”. Glad to hear the painting conveyed some of that warmth
