The nights in my studio come early at this time of year and as it’s way up in the attic of an old 18c house, it affords a fabulous view across the rooftops of Vaison La Romaine and the night sky.
I was looking at the moon and thinking of its power and magical effect on the tides but also upon us as we look at it.
This was the starting point for this piece, a dreamscape where the viewer, in the silence of the solitary landscape, notices the gentle sigh of the waves moving in communion with the full moon.

This is so quiet and calm that I feel as as though I am that lone person standing on the beach; i can almost hear the ‘sighing’ of the waves. It is a lovely start to your painting year John – all the very best for the year ahead John.

I agree Christine, the title really came from the atmosphere in the painting, it is so quiet a piece and the light I think is quite unusual, which gives it an unreal quality, as if the viewer dreaming, if that makes sense. What a beautiful way to welcome the new year, John. I love the mysterous sky and the way the rays of light illuminate those little hillocks. And the colors work so wonderfully. That bit of red is genius — it brings the whole scene into focus somehow. I’m always impressed with those subtle but masterly touches of yours.
