The heat came, bringing with it sultry evenings and nights.
What it also brought was the most glorious, intense, colour-filled sunsets.
One evening, I was driving past St Hippolyte, a few kilometres down the road from where I live, and happened upon the setting sun.
The glowing globe seemed large against the heat shimmer in the burnt-orange sky.
I stopped the car to fully take in the moment.
And slowly, the sun disappeared below the distant hillside.
I left the memory of that sight percolate for a week.
And then, when I was starting a new large canvas, the first colour I made was a rich burnt orange.
The memory of that evening was in my finger tips…
Below is a detail of the sun built up in glazes of colour to give it depth and richness
When was the last time you saw a striking sunset?
As always, I’d love to hear what you think about the painting.
Wow, John…thank looks amazing!!! You always enrich us with your elegant color choices. You also make me wish I had deep pockets! LOL!! I also loved your last Icarus painting and the explanation attached. Just wonderful!! Simply love your eye and your talent.
Hi Terry,
Thanks very much for the comment. It’s lovely to hear that the posts are still bringing you pleasure. Hope you and Sandy are well
What a sight to behold John – no wonder it inspired you to paint this striking and powerful painting. The colour is quite mesmerising and I like the the way the violet contrasts and appears to shimmer. I think it is a coincidence but I gather that today there is to be a lunar eclipse and a red moon – your painting just got me thinking about red and in fact the many colours we see in the day and night sky and how they can sometimes be incredibly intense. Thank you for letting us know about the summer sale too – it is a great opportunity for collectors to own one of your unique and lovely paintings.
Thank you for your wonderful insights on the painting Christine
