Dark into Light, Prelude by John O'Grady | A Panoramic Dawn Skyscape Painting
8″ x 24″ x 1.75″ acrylic on canvas, ready to hang

SOLD

Once finished, this piece reminded me of one of my ‘Dark into Light’ paintings.

It’s that moment when light emerges from behind the clouds.

A moment filled with anticipation.

It also brought to mind Whistler’s series of moonlight nocturne paintings that evoke strong musical associations.

Whistler’s nocturnes convey simplicity and calm.

This painting is about a beginning hence the choice of the word prelude. A prelude to the day announced by light emerging and the opening movement of a beautiful piece being played out before our eyes.

A symphony of colour emerges from behind the clouds: salmon orange, pale greens and cool blues fill the air.

The bright filigree surrounding the cloud works in harmony with the light that falls upon the sea.

A long panoramic format is always a challenge to paint.

It’s an exercise in finding a way to balance form and colour. Ultimately, the result is rewarding.

I’d love to hear what you think of this prelude to a new day.
